Recreate This Space #1 : The Green and Marble Kitchen

This is a new series where once a month I will show you how I break down some of my favourite spaces into DIY plans to recreate them in your own home. For each room element I will either give  a high or low price point for purchasing a similar item OR a buy or DIY option! No matter your budget or DIY skill level you can recreate these spaces in your own home!

This month’s space is this gorgeous kitchen by Devol Kitchens, referred to as the Peckham-Rye kitchen. It’s a mixture of formal and rustic and is very unique with dark green cabinets,  bold marble countertop and backsplash, and brass accents.

 

 

Kitchen Cabinets

If your current kitchen cabinets are in good shape, definitely consider painting them.  I painted our cabinets last year using our paint sprayer and I swear by Benjamin Moore Advance paint. The drying time is ridiculously long and it takes forever to cure but man, I think it is totally worth it. Try Benjamin Moore’s Lafayette Green (HC-135) for a deep, classic green.

Hardware

I love the look of the brass cabinet hardware against the dark green cabinets. Buying new cabinet hardware can get pricey but there are definitely some affordable options out there:

Under $10:  Try Hickory Hardware conquest knobs and williamsburg cup pulls

Under $20: Check out these gorgeous Alno knobs and pulls

DIY: Use your existing cabinet hardware and spray paint them with a metallic spray paint like Valspar Metallic Enamel in Gold.

 

 

Countertop

All that marble really makes this kitchen but can be heartbreaking as a countertop because of the high costs and soft, porous nature.

 

Carrara marble is the most affordable option (around $60/sq ft) and make sure to get them sealed to prevent stains.

 

If you’re too nervous about marble there are a lot of granite options that have the same look but can be slightly more affordable (around $50/sq ft) and more durable. Check out Princess White, River White Andromeda and Bianco Romano which are all nice options. Our countertop (pictured) is Kashmire White granite.

 

If you have laminate countertops and are not quite ready to commit to replacing them check out this video tutorial to paint your countertop to look like marble.

 

Backsplash

To completely recreate this look you COULD create a backsplash using the same material as your countertop…but who has the budget for that? (Definitely not me).

 

Instead try a marble or marble-look tile backsplash but make sure to match to your countertop if you want a cohesive look.

Kitchen Island

I love that the island in this kitchen is a rustic table that is both workspace and casual dining table. There are so many great farmhouse tables available online, try one of these:

Lights

How gorgeous are all those lights? I love the cage pendant lights above the island and I fully support the use of sconces in the kitchen. Mixing metals and Edison bulbs  add a nice touch.

Wood Floors

I know, I know…wood floors in the kitchen can be problematic. Solid hardwood floors can expand and won’t necessarily hold up well with the spills and moisture of a kitchen. If you want to do wood, try and engineered hardwood which holds up a bit better with moisture. We used Bruce engineered hardwood and have been very happy with it. 

 

Definitely also check out the new laminate options out there, we have Laminate from Beaulieu (pictured) in our basement and I kinda wish we had put it throughout the whole house. The look of wood for almost half the cost!

Faucet

A kitchen faucet can add a lot of personality to a kitchen. I love the brass vintage look in this kitchen
to use something similar try the Twisthaus Two Handle model from Whitehaus Collection (pictured) or the Essex Double Handle by Kingston Brass.

 

 

 

Wood Ceiling

Love that wood plank ceiling? There are a few awesome ways to recreate this look at home:

 

Stikwood (pictured) makes adhesive wood strips that you could attach to your ceiling as long as they’re not popcorn ceilings or too rough.

 

You could also DIY your plank ceilings using V-groove planks from the hardware store (following this tutorial from The Idea Room or create your own planks using 1/4″ plywood (like I did for our shiplap bathroom) using this awesome from Sawdust Girl.

 

If you’re like me and a wood plank ceiling would not fit with the rest of your house I suggest skipping the ceiling and instead make your open shelf (or shelves) out of wood. It will add the rustic wood vibe without the extra cost of changing your ceiling.

 

 

Outlet Face Plates

Add an extra touch by replacing your outlet & light switch face plates to match the other brass elements in the kitchen. I love the Adorne collection from Legrand (pictured) and would love to replace all the outlets and light switches throughout our house with these babies.

 

If you don’t want to replace all your outlets and light switches you can replace just the face plates with ones like these from Home Depot. You could also bust out your gold spray paint again to give your existing plates a quick and easy makeover.

 

Open Shelves

If you want to keep the look of the marble shelves with gold shelf brackets you could use these shelves from CB2 (pictured).

 

DIY a similar look by building MDF shelves and painting them with a high gloss white paint (make sure to colour match to your backsplash and countertop) and spray paint some simple metal shelf brackets with gold paint.

 

Beadboard cabinet backing

Did you notice the beadboard inside that glass front cabinet? Easily recreate these by taking out your cabinet shelves and lining the backs of your cabinets with beadboard wallpaper painted in Benjamin Moore Crystalline AF-485.
