It’s finally here! Week six of our kitchen makeover One Room Challenge. If you haven’t visited us before you can catch up on all our progress here:
Week One Week Two Week Three Week Four Week Five
What a crazy six weeks! This was our first One Room Challenge and I’m definitely hooked – but no more kitchens mmm kay? Just to get this part over with, I have a confession: We did not finish everything on time. Some of our cabinet doors were painted later than the rest and they are still tacky.
So now that we’ve got that out of the way let’s pretend that I didn’t tell you that and check out our new kitchen! Here’s a reminder of the “before” state:
And now – the view from our hallway!
Such a big difference! You see the new pendant above our kitchen table and a peak of the tiles from the front door of the house and it just draws you in.
Turning the corner you definitely get the full impact of the new two-toned cabinets and all the tile. Everything seems so much brighter and even though the counters & floor tiles haven’t changed they look brand new! I’m also so glad we decided to tile all the way around the window.
The floating shelves turned out great and while they don’t hold has much as the cabinet that used to be in that corner they are definitely much more attractive.
Remember that door that needed surgery? It ended up being a lot easier to cut it down than I expected!
Can you tell which one it is? Nope! I think Chris is the only person who can point it out if he gets really really close. I embrace minor imperfections …it’s CHARACTER.
Moving the cabinets to the ceiling and adding the open shelf has much such a big difference clearing up a lot of small things that used to live on the counter like coffee & tea.
And they also allow us to put some nice things one display and keep things we use often at an easy reaching level for mum.
Did I ever mention that we have 9′ ceilings in our kitchen? Yeah, none of us can reach past the second shelf in the cabinets…definitely going to need an attractive step ladder.
And in true Casey fashion wrapping up this project has inspired even more projects! In addition to the much needed ladder, I also want to make a sort of command center for the side of the pantry unit, sew new covers for the kitchen chairs, put in some dividers/drawers in some lower cabinets for more organization and I really want to refinish the kitchen table with a more grey/brown stain.
Phew! I’m definitely going to be keeping busy….but for now I’m taking a break from the kitchen while I make some much needed (and small) improvements to our shared office – more on that soon.
Thank you so much for following along with our kitchen makeover. Next week I’ll be posting all our sources along with more ‘before & after’ shots with all the doors finished – and hopefully a new faucet which has yet to arrive! I hope you’ll come back and check it out.
And now I’m going to go catch up on all the amazing transformation that have been done by the One Room Challenge contributors & guest participants. There are some really amazing projects I’ve been following along with and I can’t wait to see how they turned out! Be sure to check them all out at Calling it Home.
Your kitchen looks terrific!! I really like that you took the white tiles up to the top and all around the window. So well thought out 🙂

Your kitchen looks amazing! You are right, it’s so much brighter and up to date with the changes you’ve made. I know that was a lot of hard work and it was worth it. 🙂

Whew….I know painting kitchen cabinets is a job because I have done it before! They look great and taking them up to the ceiling was brilliant! Love the gray on the bottom cabinets! Really great makeover!
