Chris and I have shared a home office since we moved into our house. It’s been great sharing the space, but since I started my business and working from home most days, it’s become a little…cramped. This is a classic Casey problem of “too much stuff”.
Originally I wanted to take the wall down between the office and the small bedroom next door, to create a larger space. Chris didn’t like the idea of losing a bedroom so he decided to move his office, into what is currently our guest room, across the hall.
So, without further ado, here is our starting point:
If this room seems familiar, it might be because this is the second time this office has been the focus of a One Room Challenge. Three years ago I set out to make a more beautiful and organized shared office space for Chris and me, but partway through my dad’s health took a turn for the worst and he passed away shortly after the challenge ended.
I was grateful to have a project to keep me busy, where I could organize and bring order when I felt like everything was falling apart. But, in the end, I had very little energy or time to put into the project.
Since then, I have gone back to school, started my own business, and am following a passion that I’ve had since I was a teenager – interior design.
My new office needs to be a place where I have to work. That is calming and organized, but also stylish and put together. I need a place where I can be creative, but also potentially, meet with clients. I also want to use a lot of the furniture we already have, but refreshed with new paint, stain or upholstery.
The fact that this office will be completely my own also means that I get to decorate it however I want – without worrying about whether or not Chris will like it too.
Design Mood Board
The best part of this One Room Challenge is that once the six weeks are over, my mum and I are going on a cruise! So every week of progress will also be counting down to an amazing vacation!
I’ve got a lot to get done in the next six weeks, and if you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen in my stories the updates I was making to our spare room (aka the room of shame) to get ready. Make sure to follow me there for more behind-the-scenes and in-progress updates!
Here’s my full makeover to-do list:
- Move Chris across the hall into what will become his new office
- Create a temporary office in the spare room (this girl still needs to work!)
- Paint the walls (goodbye yellow!)
- Refinish my desk
- Sew new chair cushion covers
- Paint some of my small Ikea storage units
- Rearrange the furniture
- Install new lighting, outlets & switch
- Makeover antique “guest chair”
- Figure out some sort of wall planner system
- Find fun accessories to decorate!
While we’ll be making changes in Chris’ new office at the same time, I’ll be sharing that room reveal after the One Room Challenge and after my vacation!
