I can’t believe we’re finally done this one room challenge and that we actually finished in the six-week time frame!
Part way through this project I definitely started to doubt myself – was this really a good idea? But, now that it’s done I can say with 100% certainty it was totally a good idea.
Let’s take a quick look back at what we started with – two closets of a small hallway with lots (and lots) of doors.
Chris had a reach-in closet on the left and I had a walk-in closet on the right. While both closets were technically fine, I thought we could better use the space by creating one giant shared walk-through closet. We moved the entrance over the to the end of the wall giving us a ton of wall space in our bedroom (which I have since filled with bookcases). Now when you stand in the entrance to our closet the first thing that you see is my vintage dresser.
Isn’t that better than a bunch of doors?! The new walk-through closet is not only big, it’s incredibly functional.
We repurposed the Ikea Algot closet system that I had already been using in my walk-in closet and just added a few new pieces here and there to maximize the space.
I take up one end of the closet with a mix of shelves, hanging space and a small Ikea Rast dresser. While the dresser is really cute, I didn’t realize how little it holds until I started filling it. I might end up moving it into the bedroom to use as a bedside table and putting some different drawers in its place.
Chris’ area is set up right now as two sections of double hanging bars, but it’s still a work in progress. He hasn’t decided how he wants to configure it yet and might end up adding some pull-out baskets to the bottom or even a third narrow section on the right hand side.
My shoes now have their own home in an old bookcase that was painted to fit in with the rest of the room.
The tall middle shelf holds a bunch of my jewelry which was previously hidden in a drawer.
I’m so happy with how this closet turned out! I especially love that my vintage dresser has a real home now AND that I finally have a full length mirror – it’s been 4 years without one!
I also had fun picking out some great accessories for the top of the dresser. My favourites are the faux terrarium, the small wooden dish and a framed painting by one of my favourite artists (and best friends) Meaghan Hyckie.
While the reno for this closet was definitely challenging (let us never speak of drywall mudding again) it was definitely worth it.

Love the color and everything looks so organized! I had to laugh at your comment about not ever speaking again about drywall mudding. We did our garage a few months ago and it was exhausting.
I love how open and organized everything is. You did a fantastic job!

Your new (big!) closet looks great! So organized. This is exactly what we have (in your “before”) – a closet for him and a (small) walk-in for me. This same type of makeover is on my to-do list – pretty far down the list though because it involves moving pipes and we don’t know what we’re doing! 😉
