Master Bedroom Makeover Plans | 2017 Fall One Room Challenge Kick Off

I am so excited to be kicking off the One Room Challenge today! For my third fall challenge I’m excited to be giving our master bedroom a makeover over the next six weeks. I have a lot of exciting plans for this space and I’m so lucky to be working with a some amazing sponsors for this makeover.

In the spring you might remember that Chris and I gave our closets a huge makeover, turning them from two closets in a cluttered hallway to a spacious shared space. It’s time the rest of our room gets the makeover it deserves!

To give you an idea of the size, here’s a photo I took of the room when we first took possession of our house:

This room is HUGE – it’s way more space than we’ve ever had in a bedroom before. Because we moved here from a small apartment, the scale of our furniture doesn’t quite fit with the size of the room. Because I’m not working with a huge budget for this room, I’ll be “refreshing” our existing furniture and adding some new elements to make the room feel more polished, while remaining cozy and comfortable.

Here’s what our room looks like right now, not bad, but also not very inspiring.

Also – Yes, our bed is missing it’s slipcover. The old slipcover was beige canvas, stained and gross. Trust me, you didn’t need to see that. I’ve started taking it apart so I can use it to create a pattern for a new cover which will be in a dark grey linen-look fabric.

One of my biggest projects for this room makeover will be our bookcases. These are across from our bed and hold the TV, books, and a bunch of other random things (a plastic crown? a yoga mat? Hey look, part of the bed slipcover!). As you can tell, they are filled to the brim and look super messy!

The skis and cat toys probably don’t help either.

And yes, that is a bedside table under the window. It’s been emptied and is heading to the garage to start it’s “expansion” makeover. Apparently I got a little too excited about starting my DIY projects that I started moving things around before I took my “before” photos. Oh well.

Anyways…I think my most challenging project will be the new storage unit that I will be building to replace these bookcases. It will have cabinet space (for hiding things behind doors) and shelf space (for displaying things). I’ll have to take a serious look through these shelves and let some things go – I mean, do I need my psychology textbook from first year university? Probably not.

p.s. We’re not going to talk about the random wood table top behind my bedroom door or the fact that I have no idea where it came from or how long it’s been there.

For my inspiration, here’s the material board I’ve created for the new space:

So, what do I actually plan to get done in the next six weeks? Here’s my to-do list:

  1. Create a feature wall behind the bed
  2. Recover the bed frame with new fabric
  3. Restyle the wall above the headboard
  4. Enlarge our existing bedside tables
  5. Build new storage unit with cabinets & open shelves
  6. Create a seating area at the foot of the bed for reading/relaxing
  7. Install new light fixtures above bedside tables
  8. Find a new rug for the foot of the bed (maybe round?)

Now it’s time to actually get to work! Make sure to follow me on Instagram stories where I’ll be posting updates on all my DIY projects and makeover progress. AND make sure to check out all the other amazing guest participants taking part in this season’s One Room Challenge on Calling it Home!

  1. Hey Casey!

I’m doing my master bedroom for the ORC too! I love the idea of a fabrics board as separate from a mood board. There’s something so tactile and ambient about it. Looking forward to seeing the update!
